I know i tend to rant on about the weather in England, but who doesn’t. Its generally crap and when draining that tends to be a bit of a problem. The infamous rule ‘when it rains, don’t go in drains’ is always audible when the heavens decide to dump their load on you. But at what stage is the rule supposed to be enforced?, how much water has to fall before you can officially call off any exploration into the dark and chunky?
As you may or may not know earlier in the year i spent a week in Stockholm exploring some of the craziest infrastructure i have ever seen. Well this week saw my contact gracing the shores of England, so it was only fair i returned the favour. Roll on the tour. Our aim, to travel up the country visiting sites and finish at the creme fraiche of drainer madness, Accrington.
Plan set, crew assembled we crammed into the car and set forth northwards. Unfortunately due to a slight issue with our transportation, donor wheels had to be used, Honda wheels to be precise. This did not fair well on the motorways. If the car even thought about exceeding 60mph, Jesus quickly bitch slapped it, smiting the steering with Parkinson’s. 59 it is then.
One thing i must point out is i am very disappointed with the services along the M1. The Mcdonalds breakfast doesn’t exist between London and Nottingham in any of their crappy stations. I eventually had to settle for something called a Wimpy which looked too much like real food for my liking, that and i actually had to wait for it to be cooked. No-no, don’t like that one bit.
Our first stop of was the Markeaton Storm Relief Culvert, also know as Flo Selecta. Constructed in 1938 and discovered by Littlemike and Yaz many moons ago this culvert looked like the dogs nuts. A stupidly large infall, weird features and photogenic junctions. To a point this was true, the infall was gigantic and the horseshoe shaped tunnel was defiantly worth checking, but beyond that the rest was apparently disappointing. I say apparently because under advise from a man who knows a thing or two about drains, the rest wasn’t worth to effort to check.
