Also known as the Brixton Storm Relief. We had been unable to access this section before due to the current of the Effra sewer before it diverts into it. We set a plan to enter towards the end of the relief and walk back.

Sure enough with a little bit of looking we found our manhole, kitted up and headed down.

Unlike the other drains ive been this one was slightly different, in most cases there had been a platform or some kind of indent that the ladder would have been in, but here the ladder lands you smack bang in the middle of the main pipe. Another detail we noticed was the amount of ladders there was one every 30 meters or so.

The drain itself was a concrete one. Roughly 8ft in diameter and a little slippery in places. We had two choices either head down towards the river or towards the Effra. Since the Effra is one of the original buried rivers we headed that way as we suspected there could be some brick wonders.

After a while we passed several roof supported sections which had the shape of a sideways D. The roof looked like it was made of wood but i was assured it was concrete.

Five more minutes of walking we sighted some brickwork in the distance. And before long the pipe opened up into a dual passage oval chamber. Half way through there was a overhanging metal pipe carrying the Effra sewer. With only a small space underneath to get through.

The worrying thing was the sheer amount of water. Since there was nowhere for it to drain it was very, very deep. I had to see what was behind the overhanging pipe as it blocked our views so i handed loops my bag and set off down the left branch.

As i set off the floor sloped downwards. The water now almost over my chest water it finally stopped rising. And i got to the pipe. There was roughly a ft of space underneath so let just say i was very close to ermmm washing my hair??.

I squeezed underneath and the chamber rose up out of the water up a set of submerged stairs and eventually to a diverting wall which held the original Effra design. It was pretty cool even if it smelt a little as the ceilings were arched like in the waterloo underground station. I wanted to get a picture so i headed back and got my camera.

I was just about to go under the overhanging sewer and i had a little problem. Due to all my concentration being on my camera and making sure i didn't give it a chocolate dipping i failed to notice my back was lower then before. And before i knew it i felt cold nastiness pouring in. I jolted back with shock, smacking my head on the sewer pipe. Now full to the brim i headed up onto the walkway and drained several pints of "fun" from my boots.

Oh well i was wet might as well make the most of it. I set up camera and with the help of long range lighting technician loops we took a few pictures. Back under the pipe, no problems this time. I rejoined loops and we headed back out onto our next target.
