This is the site the UE grand high so to speak. As of yet there has been nothing that has come close to the sheer size, scale, history or features of the place.
Longbridge is or sadly was the home of Rover, Englands once mighty superpower of a car manufacturer. The site just reeks with history, writing on the desks such as "say no to closures" and "we wont give up" give a unique feel. When it finally closed it was a major blow to Englands industry and well as a huge knock for employment in Birmingham.
We travelled up to Longbridge during the week as it was my only free day due to work and as we drove around the site the sheer scale of the place became apparant.
We parked up and headed in to the older parts first discovered by Raddog. This side was stripped and had nothing in but the place was still huge, the main building took almost 10 minutes to walk from one end to the other. Behind that was another building which was currently being used to store all the bits of machinery being sold at auction.
From here we headed into the tunnel littered underneath longbridges "flight shed". These huge expansive tunnel reminded me on dover but on a much larger scale while walking around here we bumped into oxygen theif and dweeb. After a few hellos and a snack break we headed back and over the road to the flight shed.
This is where it started to get crazy. Everything was there, crash tested cars, engines, seats, computers still running and a fully stocked rally room and parts room with a whole mustang engine!. We had to keep on our toes as the lights were on and we didnt know if anyone was still in there. In one of the rooms we found a caterham 7 which by the looks of it was being worked on.
We headed to the other end of the flight shed passing by the engine testing areas and the crash tested cars, and up into the raised platform to take pictures of the overall flight shed. We heard a loud bang and hit the deck. We waited for a while to see if anyone came but realised it was just a door blowing shut in the wind. On the way out we found a amazing find. A protoype car which rover had been designing just lying there. We must have been some of the first people not involved with rover to see this which was amazing. After a few photos we headed down and out and headed up towards the part hangers and the productions line.
The climb up was a pain as I kept sliding back down but eventually we got there. And entered into the parts shed. The place was completly full of row after row of different body parts, engine bits, brakes the lot. Not only that there was a whole room dedicated to tires and wheels with some piles being over 12 meters talls!.
We headed through here quickly and ended up at the production line. This was the best part in my opinion. It really did look like they just hit the big red stop button and walked out. All the cars were still hanging ready to be sprayed. It was an incredible sight. We walked around taking photos here and there before ending up at the paint tunnel. It looked like something from star wars :). We had now been in here over 12 hours and decided wed have to save the rest for another time so headed off back to the car.
Mission Complete!
