D.I.Y, become a god in three easy steps. The Horror Labs, Also known as The Veterinary School Of Anderlecht. Unique doesn't come close to explaining this place, buried deep in the basements of a seemingly innocent building remains a lab befitting that of Dr Frankenstein. Intestines, heads, hearts everything a budding mad scientist needs to create his or her very own monster. Currently under development, the horror labs is the last surviving building of the Anderlecht complex.
As soon as plans were made to go to Belgium this was always top of the list, and as such was the first stop on the "L"word road trip. As previously stated the rest of the Veterinary school is currently being redeveloped into apartments so the site is crawling with builders, contractors and other developers so timing was crucial. We had been given a rough idea on access by its initial explorer Sylv but we still had trouble. Every time we came remotely close to the building someone would pop out of a nearby door and proceed to dawdle for 20 minutes. It ended up taking over an hour to get inside.
Once in we had little trouble finding the main grail of the horror labs. A creaking door laid the way into the dimly lit room. Jars greeted us with a colourful glow as our torch's panned the room. The familiar sight of a cows head was the first recognizable object. We went from shelf to shelf, finding puppies, rabbits and frogs, now hollowed out with their innards placed in adjacent labeled jars. This was unreal, even though I knew pretty much what to expect I still had to pick my jaw from the floor.
Whilst taking pictures we started to get a bit edgy, every sound prompted several minutes of silence. Dripping water, banging from the open windows and at one point footsteps on the floor above. If caught what the hell do you say in this situation?. "Ermm yea were taking photos of your dead stuff, sorry buddy our bad". I doubt it, the fact that whoever catches us might not speak English made chances of that chestnut not working even higher.
We packed our kit away and headed upstairs. More jars, more innards, and a dogs head. There wasn't a great deal else to see. The majority of the building had been stripped of most things, the only remaining notable feature was the lecture room. A quick few snaps and we headed back down and casually strolled out the front door. A fleeting glance back at the building, just incredible.
