Another one of those explorer defiant ue sites. Every single door was locked inside and out, every window blocked and screwed shut, plus several barbed bendy fences. Combine that with the fact its on a live site and has a jumpy security guard who will call the police at the slightest incident and you have a real pain in the arse.

Access was going to take a bit of thought but we stuck by the “always a way” policy and sure enough after 2 hours of searching, climbing and getting cut to shreds on natures asshole we found ourself standing in a corridor which thankfully unlike every other room and corridor we found led to things!

So first stop off of the day the main hall and projection room. Its nice to see a main hall with a viewing platform thats not falling down or burnt. Red curtains draped the windows while Christmas decorations littered the floor. We could see the projection booth at the back and with the famous sling technique we managed to haul ourselves up and into the room. Wow!, I was amazed at how intact the booth was, this was probably how it looked when they finally stopped using it minus a few bits strewn over the table.

We didn’t stay too long in there as the amount of asbestos warning was insane almost everything had a warning sign including the table. So back out we went and headed down, into the tunnel beneath the asylum. Unlike the others I had been in this was relatively clean and large enough to move around it without disturbing too much, but just to be sure we donned the masks and headed to find the water tower.

We ended up getting lost coming out in three different wards before finally coming up into the boiler house. Now right next to security we were disappointed when we found no access to the tower but alas we found a pipe which had “to the mortuary” labelled on it instead!

Back underground we went and followed the pipe until we came to a blocked tunnel! The whirring of electricity behind the wooden boards. Damn this tunnel probably led to the live part which meant the mortuary was probably a nono. Ahh well we headed back up to where we first entered passing by the Bank and a few other rooms before we came to the door to admin.

Now I was fairly sure that security was outside the front but due to the amount of lights on inside we paused to think was it worth it. While deciding we saw a guard move past the end of the corridor which answered the question for us, we darted back outside and back to the car unsure if we had been seen or not. Oh well wed seen the good parts.

You should stick some of the asylums up that are long gone now.

I thought about it, but the idea of having to write about them puts me off. I’ve completely lost interest. The pictures I took pretty much all suck anyway, I had no clue how to use a camera then, others have documented them much better than I ever did.

A bit late, since i’m sure most of the building has been knocked down now. If you ever go back though, go and have a look under the ballroom floor if you didn’t. I haven’t personally been inside (been chased away many times..), but my Dad used to work there when he was younger and the ballroom floor is on springs, if you go underneath you can supposedly see stalactites of wax, from where over the years patients had waxed the floor time and time again.

Totally awesome those photos! I really like machinery and mechanical stuff, so I imagine I would of been quite at home there!
