St Mary’s Station opened in 1884 and served the Hammersmith & City and District lines. The station closed in 1938 due to the closer relocation of Aldgate East. The station building was destroyed in 1940 when it was hit by a bomb during WWII. During the war the St Mary’s was converted into air-raid shelters, the outer walls of which are visible from passing trains.

Another station, another battle with lens flare generators. TFL seem to erect these lights along the platforms just to spite the adventurous photographer, there just wasn’t enough bodies or thumbs to block them all out. St Mary’s air-raid shelters were a nice bonus for making the effort to visit, the blue walls and scraps of posters still visible in certain sections.
